EP22: A listening technique that actually works!

Salut!

This week, we're still working on the special sounds of spoken French. However, perhaps you still cannot understand spoken French after the past 3 episodes. And so today, we're going to do a little interactive episode to help you understand what you might need to do first if this is the case. I'm going to help you train your ear to perceive French sounds more accurately.

This episode will be extra quirky, but trust me, it's as quirky as it is effective!

In this episode, you'll learn:

  • why the listening comprehension exercises you are doing are not working,

  • what to look out for when listening to French,

  • and how to break down the sounds you hear to understand them better.

Today's takeaway:

1. Listening is not the same as understanding, focus on listening skills first before worrying about your comprehension.

2. Tune in to what you hear: the sounds (vowels and consonants), the rhythms (pace, breaks, speed), and the melody (the pitch and dynamics).

3. Break down the sounds: into sections, into syllables, into vowels...

4. Replicate the sounds you hear. Repeat over and over until it feels effortless.
